Chapter 13

Penelope

We sat on a hard, black couch in the out-patient surgery area holding hands and whispering to each other. I kept the conversation light, for Tessa’s sake. She needed a moment without the worry of her family sitting on her shoulders.

Before eight, we stood in the hall where I met her brother. She tapped her foot and checked her watch. Each passerby caught her attention.

At five past eight, she sighed and leaned against the wall. “He’s not coming.”

“He’ll show.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“I just am. He’ll show to give you an answer, even if it’s not the one you want.”

She nodded and took a deep breath. She looked up and sniffed the air.

“He’s coming.” She stood up straight.

Her brother glided toward her with Hugh behind him. Still in their scrubs, they stopped in front of us. Flynn favored Tessa; their eyes and hair were the same color. They even used the same expressions. Flynn frowned and looked down.

“You’re not coming,” Tessa sighed.

“No. I’m coming. But Hugh’s coming with me.”

“You can bring the whole damn hospital.” She pulled him into a hug.

Flynn stared wide eyed at Hugh, then hugged her back. Hugh smiled and gave me a wink. A weight lifted from my chest.

Flynn pulled away from her, looking between the two of us. “You smell like her.”

“There are worse things to smell like.” Tessa smirked at her brother.

He smiled at her, standing eye to eye. “I’ve missed you, Tessa.”

“I’ve missed you, too.” Her face softened when she pinched his cheek.

“Let’s get out of here.” I grabbed Tessa’s hand to pull her toward the entrance.

“Did you already say bye to your mom?” Hugh asked.

I stopped in my tracks and slowly turned toward him. “Excuse me?”

“Oh.” Hugh’s eyes went wide, and he pressed his lips together. “You weren’t also here to see your mom?”

Fynn grasped Hugh’s arm and whispered, “Don’t piss off the necromancer.”

“Where is she?” I took a deep breath in an attempt to calm down. Tessa started rubbing my arm with her free hand.

“In room 203,” he whispered, and frowned at Flynn.

“Why?” I felt small. Why didn’t she tell me?

“I can’t say. Confidentiality and all that.”

I turned to Tessa, looking down at our intermingled hands. “Do you mind if I—.”

“Go.” She squeezed my hand. “Do you want me to come with you?”

“I’d like that. Thank you.”

She turned toward her brother and Hugh. “Can y’all wait here for half an hour?”

“It’s fine,” said Flynn. “Go see your mother-in-law.”

I turned away before I could see Tessa’s expression. I liked the sound of that a bit too much. She followed along behind me, never letting go of my hand.

We made it to room 203. The door created a barrier I didn’t want to cross. If I stayed here, it wasn’t real. My mom should be at home. She should be at her part-time job. She should be anywhere but here. Hadn’t she been through enough?

Tessa kissed my temple. “Go on,” she whispered. “I’ll stay out here.”

Our hands released one another. With one more glance back, I knocked and entered the room.
